When you go out of town, hiring a house-sitter can be a good way to ensure your house, pets and possessions stay safe. However, like any service, house-sitting often requires compensation.

    Hours Required

  1. For some, having a house-sitter come by for a few hours during the day is sufficient. In this case, $20 to $25 per day is standard. If you prefer having a house-sitter stay overnight, you should offer to pay about $50 per day. Also, if the house-sitter must commute daily to your house, gas costs should be compensated.
  2. Responsibilities

  3. Depending on the responsibilities required of the house-sitter, you might need to pay more. For example, if you would like the house-sitter to clean or take care of your lawn and garden, more compensation might be necessary.
  4. Pets

  5. If you have pets that need to be fed, walked and given medicine, you should also expect to pay a little more money.
  6. Length of Trip

  7. If your trip will last longer than a week or two, you might be able to negotiate with your house-sitter so that a reduced fee can be paid. If you're going to be out of town for a short period of time, you should expect to pay a standard amount.
  8. Negotiation

  9. When hiring a house-sitter, make sure to negotiate payment that suits both of you. If you are departing for a long-term trip, you and your house-sitter may be able to come to an agreement on weekly or monthly payments.
