Types of Rose Plants

With one exception, the roses grown in gardens are complex hybrids belonging to the genus Rosa. The American Rose Society classifies all roses into three main groups: Species or wild roses, Old Garden Roses and Modern Roses. There are a few specialty firms that have made Old Garden Roses available, but the Modern hybrids are the most popular. Modern roses can be classified as hybrid teas, grandifloras, floribundas, patio roses, miniatures, climbers and shrub roses. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Hybrid Teas and Climbing Hybrid Teas

    • These are by far the most popular of the Modern roses. They are characterized by their long pointed buds, and large, well-formed flowers, born singly on long stems. Plants reach a height of 2 1/2 to 5 feet. Climbing hybrid teas can reach a height of 10 to 15 feet.

    Grandifloras and Climbing Grandifloras

    • Grandiflora

These roses produce flowers similar in size and form to the hybrid teas. The plants are a bit taller than the hybrid teas, and flowers are produced on shorter stems, singly or in clusters.

    Floribundas and Climbing Floribundas

    • "English Miss" floribunda.

Single flowers are smaller, measuring 2 to 3 inches across, but what they lack in size, they make up in numbers. Flowers are born in clusters and produced in waves. The plants average 18 to 42 inches tall

    Patio Roses

    • Smaller than hybrid teas but larger than miniatures, patio roses are an ideal size for container gardening.

    Miniature Roses

    • "Meillandine" miniature rose.

Plants are less than 12 inches tall with blooms that measure less than 1 inch across. They come in all forms, including upright, cascading and climbers. Climbing varieties can reach as high as 12 feet.

    True Climbing Roses and Ramblers

    • Climbing Rose.

Ramblers produce thick clusters of small flowers that only appear in June. True climbers produce their flowers on lateral stems that grow from long gracefully arching canes.
