Vegetarian Vs. Meat Diets

There are strong proponents of both the vegetarian diet and the meat diet. There are benefits to both diets, and, ultimately, the choice is based on personal preference.

  1. History

    • Humans have been eating both plant and animal matter for at least the last million years or so. Before humans could use fire or tools, however, they mostly subsisted on vegetation and scavenged animal matter.

    Types

    • There is quite a variety of diets that are grouped under the term vegetarian. These include pescatarian, flexitarian, vegan and lacto- or ovo-vegetarian.

    Benefits of Meat Diets

    • Meat is the best source of protein, which the body needs to function optimally. Red meat is also a good source of iron, b vitamins, riboflavin, thiamin and niacin.

    Benefits of Vegetarian Diets

    • Vegetarians generally have a lower risk of developing high blood pressure, several forms of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity because these diets are usually lower in fat and higher in fiber.

    Warning

    • People considering a radical change in their diet should consult a physician to ensure they are receiving the proper nutrients from whichever foods they choose.
