Sleep Technologist Salary

A sleep technologist, technically called a registered polysomnographic technologist (RPSGT), supervises the technicians who observe patients and the monitoring equipment during sleep studies. The sleep technologist analyzes the results, prepares reports and discusses results with patients.

  1. Salary Range

    • According to SleepWeb, the average salary range for sleep technologists in 2009 is about $44,300 to $55,600 per year.

    Regional Differences

    • The Middle Atlantic region pays the highest average salary to sleep technologists, at about $67,800. The lowest salaries are in the West South Central region, with an average around $40,500.

    Average Salary

    • The Indeed salary website shows average salary for sleep technologists between $52,000 and $55,000 annually.

    2003 Salaries

    • A 2003 survey administered by ADVANCE for Managers of Respiratory Care found that of 400 sleep technology respondents, 31 percent were earning between $40,000 and $49,999 and 26 percent between $30,000 to $39,999. As shown by results from Indeed and SleepWeb, average salaries have improved.

    Extremes

    • In the ADVANCE survey, about 2 percent were earning under $15,000, while 4 percent were making $80,000 or more.
