Why Do Feet Go Numb When Exercising?

Some people report numbness in their feet beyond the normal aches and weariness that comes with a strenuous workout. For most cases, numb feet can be rectified easily, but other more serious considerations also need to be remembered.

  1. Start with the Laces

    • The first thing you should check is if the shoelaces are not too tight, either on the lower or upper portion of the foot. Relace the shoe and make sure the pressure is constant along the entire foot.

    The Right Shoe

    • Be sure you're wearing the right style of shoe for the workout -- don't wear tennis shoes for running, and vice versa. Invest the time to work with a specialist at a sports store -- this will improve comfort and performance.

    Thin Plantar Pads

    • Some people have thin plantar fat pads and are more prone to numbness because the pressure, vibration, and friction created by the workout are not dissipated evenly along the foot. Insoles can often help add needed padding.

    Nerves

    • Tiny growths on your nerve fibers called neuromas and even arthritis can affect blood circulation because the body can shunt blood away from the extremities. A podiatrist with sports medicine experience can diagnose these conditions.

    Concern

    • Note that extended numbness in the feet may be an indicator of diabetes, so if numbness continues during or after a workout, consult a physician.
