Ford Car History

The Ford car was created by Henry Ford, who founded the Ford Motor Company. The company's corporate headquarters is located in Dearborn, Michigan. Ford's first mass-produced car, the Model T, gave families affordable transportation. But over the decades Ford continues to post dramatic losses in capturing the automotive market share.

  1. Origin

    • Henry Ford in 1919.

Henry Ford sought a car that any person could purchase on a payment plan. With 11 investors he formed the Ford Motor Company in 1903.

    The Model T

    • The Ford Model T brought the automobile to the masses.

The Model T was introduced in 1908 and was the first automobile mass-produced on an assembly line, with more than 15 million manufactured through 1927.

    The Model A

    • Edsel Ford urged his father to abandond the outdated styling of the Model T for the lively Model A.

The modern and spunky Model A was introduced in 1927 to replace the aging Model T, which had lost its core customer base to other auto makers.

    The V-8

    • This 1932 Ford sedan is powered by a V-8 engine, allowing it to reach high speeds.

In 1932, Ford introduced the single block flathead V-8 engine that forever changed how factory mass-produced cars were powered by employing an engine with high-performance capabilities.

    The Mustang

    • The Mustang not only revolutionized car styling but market campaigns.

To capture the Baby Boomer market coming of driving age in 1964, Ford introduced the sporty Mustang coupe and 2+2 fastback with a youth-oriented marketing campaign.

    Market Share

    • The 2010 Shelby Mustang GT500KR is helping keep the struggling company solvent.

In 1990, Ford held 24 percent of the market share of total vehicles produced worldwide; this dropped to 14.2 percent in 2008.
