Types of Registered Nurses

Nursing is a career with many opportunities. You further your education to become a nurse practitioner or nurse educator, or you can choose different areas of nursing to work in. The types of registered nurses vary greatly, but the nursing model of caring for the patient remains the same.

  1. Emergency Nurse

    • An emergency nurse works with many types of patients. They see patients with everything from toothaches to trauma.

    Oncology Nurse

    • An oncology nurse's job is to care for cancer patients. The patient may be in any stage of cancer undergoing chemotherapy or radiation or may be receiving treatment for cancer symptoms.

    Labor and Delivery Nurse

    • Labor and delivery nurses care for women who are in labor, have just delivered or have a pregnancy complication. They often also care for the newborn baby following delivery.

    Neonatal Nurse

    • The neonatal nurse cares for newborns who need specialized care. They often work in neonatal intensive care units at large hospitals.

    Perioperative Nurse

    • The perioperative nurse is an operating room nurse who cares for patients immediately before, during, and after surgery. During surgery, the nurse is either a scrub nurse, circulating nurse or RN first assist.

    Other Nurse Types

    • Other registered nurses could be school, staff, hospice, psychiatric, orthopaedic or nephrology nurses
