Food Writing Jobs

Writing about food takes more than just knowing what tastes good. You also have to have at least a basic understanding of how the food is made and served, and the different style guidelines of newspapers and magazines. With these skills, the options are plenty.

  1. Restaurant Reviewer

    • A restaurant reviewer is someone who dines out and reports on the entire experience--from service to environment to table settings to cleanliness to taste and appearance of food.

    Food Critic

    • A food critic's job is to taste different types of food and give an opinion on them. This can be risky, as critics end up eating a lot of stuff they might not like.

    Food Editor

    • The food editor of a newspaper or magazine often is someone who has had some experience writing about food or restaurants, or at the very least, a background in reporting.

    Cookbook Author

    • Advanced food writers often use what they've learned from covering the field and apply the various recipes to a book.

    Food Columnist

    • Columnists offer their opinions--as opposed to straight, unbiased reporting--on the goings-on in the food industry.
