There are many myths about the care of relaxed hair. Some people think that it is possible to "wash out" a relaxer, and that washing the hair too soon after a relaxer will reverse the effects. This is a complete myth; the results of a relaxer are permanent and cannot be reversed. However, certain types of shampoos can be beneficial or harmful for relaxed hair.

    Neutralizing Shampoos

  1. Neutralizing shampoos are necessary immediately after a relaxer treatment. This type of shampoo neutralizes the chemicals from the relaxer and ensures the health of the hair.
  2. Moisturizing Shampoos

  3. The chemicals in relaxers can cause dryness in the hair. Moisturizing shampoos are needed to keep the hair moisturized, and help to decrease breakage.
  4. Clarifying Shampoos

  5. Clarifying shampoos are used to strip the hair of product buildup. This type of shampoo can be harsh and will cause more dryness if used too quickly after a relaxer; wait a few weeks to use a clarifying shampoo.
  6. How Often to Wash the Hair

  7. It doesn't matter how often hair is washed after a relaxer. Some people prefer to wash every day, while others prefer a less frequent shampooing schedule.
  8. How to Wash the Hair

  9. To retain straightness of the hair, don't work the shampoo in by scrunching up the hair with the fingers. Slide the fingers through the hair, straight down, in order to retain the straightness from the relaxer.
