There are multiple symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome. Women may experience only one of these symptoms or may experience all of them. Every woman is different and will have a different experience with polycystic ovary syndrome. These are just some of the most prominent symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome.

    Menstruation

  1. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome may notice a difference in their menstruation than what is considered normal. This may include missed periods, periods that last too long or lack of ovulation entirely.
  2. Cysts

  3. Cysts are a normal part of menstruation, but they come and go. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome have cysts that stay consistently. They are often described as a "string of pearls."
  4. Weight Gain

  5. Weight gain and even obesity can be symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome. Most often women tend to gain weight in their stomach, which creates an apple shape.
  6. Hormones

  7. Increased hormone levels are symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome. This includes estrogen, androgen and testosterone. This must be diagnosed through a blood test.
  8. Hair Growth

  9. Some women experience excess hair growth due to an increase in male hormones. They may notice the appearance of facial hair or an increase in dark hair on their arms or back.
  10. Acne

  11. Polycystic ovary syndrome can also cause acne due to the increased level of hormones in the body. It may be minor or present itself as full blown acne.
