What Size Is a Billiards Table?

Billiards tables don't have one set size. The dimensions of a billiards table can vary depending on the billiard game the table is made for--and even then they can differ. The one constant is that a billiard table's length is usually twice its width.

  1. Pool Tables

    • Pool tables, also called pocket billiards tables, come in three basic sizes: seven feet, eight feet and nine feet. These tables are named for the table's length.

    Preferences

    • Most home pool tables are the eight-foot variety--eight feet long by four feet wide. Professional billiards tournaments almost always use nine-foot tables--nine feet long by 4 1/2 feet wide.

    Snooker Tables

    • A billiards table for the game of snooker usually measures 12 feet by 6 feet, but there are also smaller versions measuring 9 by 5 feet. These listed measurements are rounded up, as the exact measurements are a few inches shorter.

    Surface Dimensions

    • The official dimensions of the table are its complete length and width, including the rails. The playing surface will be shorter by about three to six inches on the long side and two to three inches on the wide side.

    Considerations

    • When choosing a table, people usually take into account the size of the room and cue sticks to be used. A table usually needs a room nine feet larger on each side when using 48-inch sticks and 11 feet larger than the table for 60-inch sticks.
