What Is Camera Shake?

Camera shake is one of the leading causes of ruined photographs. It occurs when the camera moves in the photographer's hand while the shutter is open. Fortunately, camera shake is easy to prevent.

  1. Causes

    • Camera shake happens when the camera is not stabilized or when there is low light that requires a long shutter speed.

    Effects

    • When the camera moves while the shutter is open, the picture will have motion lines, or "ghosting."

    Considerations

    • Press the shutter button slowly. Camera shake is often caused when the shutter is pressed too forcefully.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Using a tripod will eliminate movement. You can also use a chair to steady the camera, brace it against a tree, use a shutter release or remote control, or use the camera's self-timer.

    Misconceptions

    • Some people think that a focusing problem ruins a photo, when actually the camera's movement is the cause. If it looks like the picture has a ghost, the camera moved during the shot.
