Canadian Passport Information

The Canadian passport is the document needed to verify Canadian citizenship while traveling abroad and upon the return home. The passport is available only to Canadian citizens, and minors younger than age 16 must have their own passport.

Application Requirements

The application for Canadian passports is three pages and contains a section for a guarantor's signature. The application also requires two identical passport photographs, a fee, proof of Canadian citizenship and verifying documents upon submission.

Methods of Applying

Methods of applying for Canadian passports include mail, Passport Canada offices, Canada Post Offices and Service Canada Centers.

Guarantors

The guarantor verifies the person applying for the passport is also the person shown in the passport photographs in the case of mail-based applications. The guarantor needs to be older than age 18, hold a valid passport and have known the applicant for more than two years.

Verification

Options to verify citizenship include a Canadian birth certificate or citizenship certificate. Identify verification documents include a driver's license from a Canadian province, health care card, certificate of Indian status, U.S. permanent resident card, a passport that has been expired for less than one year and an Old Age security card.

Fees and Expiration

For Canadians living in Canada, the fee is C$87 as of July 2009, while the fee for those living in the U.S. is C$97. Canadian passports are valid for five years for people ages 3 and older and three years for those younger than 3 years old.
