Symptoms of a Urinary Tract Infection During Pregnancy

According to the American Pregnancy Association, urinary tract infections (UTIs) are more common in pregnant women, particularly in weeks six to 24 of pregnancy. Symptoms include burning, changes in the urine's appearance and changes in urinary habits.

  1. Burning

    • For most women, the most common symptom of a urinary tract infection is a burning sensation while urinating. This may be felt as the urine passes or just after completion.

    Changes in Appearance

    • During a urinary tract infection, urine may be very dark yellow or the color of tea and may appear foamy. Blood may also be visible in the urine.

    Changes in Urinary Habits

    • A pregnant woman may experience an increase in urgency and an increase in frequency of urination. These are also symptoms of pregnancy making a urinary tract infection harder to identify.

    Risks

    • According to the American Pregnancy Association, a urinary tract infection can lead to a kidney infection if untreated. Kidney infections in pregnancy can result in preterm labor, miscarriage and low birth weight.

    Prevention

    • To prevent UTIs, the American Pregnancy Association recommends staying hydrated, wiping from front to back, urinating as soon as the urge is felt and wearing cotton panties.
