Reasons Why a Baby Won't Go to Sleep

If you've ever taken care of a baby, you know how drained you are by nap time or the end of the day. Not only is it time for baby to drift off to sleep, it's also time for you to relax. When a baby does not go to sleep, it can be traumatic for the baby and the parent.

  1. Changing Sleep Schedule

    • As your baby gets older, his sleep pattern will change. Newborns need 16 hours of sleep with three daytime naps, while 18-month-olds need only need 14 hours of sleep with two daytime naps.

    Gas

    • If your baby is gassy, he might not feel comfortable enough to sleep. Combat this with gas drops such as Mylicon.

    Change in Bedtime Ritual

    • Spending the night with grandparents might disrupt your baby's normal routine. If your baby doesn't adapt well to different surroundings, avoid overnight trips until he is older.

    Distractions

    • As babies age, they become more aware and easily distracted. Lower the volume of conversation or television when putting baby to sleep.

    Teething

    • Teething might be the culprit. This causes many babies to have restless nights, high temperatures and a general cranky disposition.
