Rosacea & Treatment
Rosacea is a dermatologic, or skin condition, that mainly affects your face. It consists of persistent redness and flushing of the skin, red bumps and stinging, dry skin, and swelling, according to the National Rosacea Society. It cannot be cured, but you can treat and manage it with various options.
-
Antibiotics
-
Antibiotics help reduce redness and inflammation associated with rosacea, as well as redness with breakouts, according to the International Rosacea Foundation. You can take antibiotics orally, or apply them topically. Oral medication helps kill bacteria in skin pores, and topical medication kills any bacteria on your skin.
Lifestyle Factors
-
There are some lifestyle modifications you can do to help reduce the degree of your rosacea. Stress reduction, avoiding caffeine and alcohol, not taking hot baths or showers, and reducing sun exposure all can lessen the severity of your rosacea.
-
Topical Steroids
-
Steroid, or cortisone, creams help to reduce inflammation, itching and burning of your skin. These creams do not cure rosacea, but help to relieve side effects like itching and dry skin.
Nonprescription Treatment
-
There are many different kinds of skin-care products you can use, but individuals with rosacea tend to have sensitive skin. Don't use products containing retinol, alcohol, benzoyl peroxide, and vitamins A or C, according to the International Rosacea Foundation.
Famous Ties
-
Former President Bill Clinton, Princess Diana and the artist Rembrandt all have been affected by rosacea.
