Cell Phone Etiquette in Public Places

Cell phones have become a part of everyday life. People have removed landlines in favor of cell phones, which means more conversation in public places. Improper usage of cell phones disrupts the atmosphere in movie theaters and even in White House press conferences. Extend courtesy by following rules of etiquette when using cell phones.

  1. Location

    • Do not use a cell phone while in a theater or lecture or meeting, or in a museum, and turn the ringer off.

    Inappropriate conversations

    • Do not have deeply personal conversations in public while on a cell phone. Go to a private location to complete the conversation.

    Volume

    • Do not speak loudly over the cell phone; others are not interested in the conversation. Speak softly into the phone.

    Texting

    • Do not text while driving. This puts the cell phone user and other drivers in danger.

    Interruptions

    • Do not allow the cell phone to interrupt in-person conversations. Let the call go to the voicemail and pick up the message later.
