Systane Eye Drops Side Effects

Systane Lubricant Eye Drops is an over-the-counter product used to treat dry or irritated eyes. Produced by Alcon, Systane eye drops decrease symptoms such as burning, itching and gritty sensations. Side effects are not common.

  1. Blurry Vision

    • When people first apply Systane eye drops, they may experience blurry vision for a short time. Driving should be avoided until this side effect disappears.

    Burning or Stinging

    • Additionally, some people experience minor burning or stinging sensations when they first apply Systane Lubricant Eye Drops. This is not of concern unless the uncomfortable feelings continue for any length of time, in which case the person may not be able to use the eye drops.

    Rare Side Effects

    • Rarely, eye pain, changes in vision and redness and irritation are associated with Systane eye drops. These side effects call for medical attention.

    Allergic Reaction

    • Another rare side effect is an allergic reaction. Signs include rash, swelling of the face or throat, severe dizziness and difficulty breathing.

    Considerations

    • People should read the product package and instructions before using in case Systane Eye Drops contain any substances that may damage their contact lenses or cause irritation in people with certain allergies. Some eye drops cannot be used while the person is wearing contact lenses.
