Common Symptoms of Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a lung disease that causes inflammation and the accumulation of fluid in the lungs. Pneumonia affects people of all ages and can be particularly fatal for infants or the elderly. The symptoms of pneumonia generally affect the chest.

  1. Cough

    • Pneumonia causes a persistent cough that often produces mucus. The mucus may be green or brown or contain blood. In older adults, coughing generally does not produce mucus.

    Fever

    • Pneumonia often causes mild to moderate fevers in patients. Fevers higher than 102 degrees Fahrenheit should be evaluated by a physician.

    Difficulty Breathing

    • Pneumonia causes shortness of breath and difficulty breathing because of the fluid and inflammation in the lungs. Breathing will be shallow and may also cause sharp pains in the chest wall.

    Weakness

    • Pneumonia can take a heavy toll on the body, causing general weakness and fatigue. Other related symptoms include lethargy and a lack of energy.

    Gastrointestinal Symptoms

    • Pneumonia can affect the gastrointestinal tract by causing nausea or vomiting in a patient. Pneumonia can also cause diarrhea.
