Job Description & Duties of a Carpenter

Carpenters are skilled craftsman who build, finish and repair residential and commercial structures. These structures may be made of wood or metal. They may also work on bridges and dams.

  1. Function

    • Carpenters build wood framing for decks, stairs, roofs and buildings, and forms for concrete and frame buildings. They install cabinets, siding, wooden flooring and counter tops.

    Skills

    • Carpenters must be able to measure accurately and calculate dimensions, as well as read blueprints. They possess skills in exterior and interior finish work, including the ability to use specific tools and equipment.

    Knowledge

    • Carpenters must be knowledgeable of policies relating to safety, quality control and cost control. They must be organized and able to complete paperwork on time

    Physical Requirements

    • This job requires the ability to climb ladders and withstand heights, and to lift heavy objects and carry them limited distances. Good eye-hand coordination is also needed.

    Potential

    • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2006, the hourly rate for a carpenter ranged from $10.87 to $30.45 an hour. Job availability depends upon the economy.
