Labrador Dog Characteristics

The Labrador Retriever offers a great combination of working dog and good-tempered companion. This medium-size breed consistently ranks as the most popular dog in America. Its intelligence, trainability and playful nature make the Lab an all-around top dog.

Temperament

Known for an even, genial temper, the Labrador makes a good companion and family dog. Aggression against other dogs or people is rare in a well-socialized Lab.

Look

A short, dense coat gives the Labrador a sleek and smooth appearance. Its overall color may be yellow, chocolate or black.

Build

Sturdy in build, the Labrador is muscular and has a well-developed chest suited for long hours in the hunting field or retrieving in water. Its tail, often called an otter tail, is thick at the base and tapers to a medium length.

Size

The Labrador Retriever stands 21 to 24 inches at the shoulder. Females typically weigh 55 to 70 lbs. and males 65 to 80 lbs.

Benefits

The Labrador makes for a good guide dog, and ranks high as a rescue dog due to its agility and stamina, coupled with an excellent nose and task concentration.

Considerations

The Labrador Retriever is a working dog. Its playful nature and physical energy require interaction with people and the outdoors to keep it out of mischief.
