Why Do Schools Have Bullies?

According to KidsHealth.org, three out of every four kids have been the victims of bullying or teasing. This can make school or even playtime difficult and can lead to more serious social, emotional and mental problems. There are many reasons why bullies act the way they do, preying on those they see as weak. If you or your child is being bullied, talk to a school counselor as soon as possible.

  1. Attention

    • Many bullies crave attention, and bullying is their way of getting it. Bullying can make someone feel more powerful or important, according to KidsHealth.org.

    Family Life

    • KidsHealth.org also notes that some bullies come from families in which acting in an angry manner is acceptable and normal behavior. Bullies may be victims of bullying themselves or even child abuse.

    Imitation of Pop Culture

    • According to Dr. Laura DeHaan, assistant professor of child development at North Dakota State University, some children bully others because they are imitating things they see in the movies or on TV.

    Peer Rejection

    • DeHaan also cites that some schools have bullies because these children are rejected by their peers.

    School Failure

    • According to DeHaan's study, bullies often arise from the group of students not doing well in school. Schools where students do not have god connections with teachers may have more bullies.
