Side Effects of Cataflam

Cataflam is a brand name for the drug diclofenac, mainly prescribed to reduce inflammation and pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), Cataflam is also prescribed to treat tendinitis and bursitis. As with all NSAIDs, numerous side effects are possible.

  1. Common Gastrointestinal Effects

    • The most common side effects of Cataflam are gastrointestinal. These include abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhea, gas, heartburn, indigestion and nausea.

    Serious Gastrointestinal Effects

    • Cataflam also can cause stomach or intestinal ulcers, and gastrointestinal bleeding. These side effects may not cause pain, and instead produce symptoms of dizziness upon standing, weakness and black, tarry stools.

    Cardiovascular Issues

    • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that people using NSAIDs, except for aspirin, may have an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. The risk may be higher for people who take these drugs for a long time.

    Increased Bleeding

    • People can experienced increased bleeding when taking Cataflam. This may be indicated by nosebleeds, tarry stools, blood in the urine, vomiting blood, and red or purple spots on the skin. People taking anticoagulants should not take diclofenac.

    Other Serious Effects

    • Other serious side effects are possible. These include high blood pressure, worsening of asthma, and liver problems with symptoms such as jaundice or dark urine.
