What Are the Differences Among First Class, Business Class and Coach Class?

First class, business class and coach class generally are the three seating sections of an airplane. The price per seat, space, service and amenities in each class vary depending on the airline and whether the flight is domestic or international.

  1. Price Per Seat

    • Of the three types of seating, coach class is the least expensive. Business class and first class are more expensive. If you are flying domestically, you should expect business class to be slightly more expensive, and if you are flying internationally, first class will be more expensive.

    Space

    • The coach section usually seats more people, so space is more limited. Business class on domestic flights tends to be a little roomier than first class. On international flights, however, first class is the largest of the three sections.

    Services

    • Depending on the airline, first class and business class can have gourmet meals and flat bed seats. Coach class, however, has a standard snack and drink, or meal service.

    Amenities

    • In coach, amenities usually are limited. If you are flying internationally, you can expect portable headphones and a shared television/movie screen, as well as radio options. In business class and first class, the amenities are upgraded and usually include a more extensive list of entertainment options.

    Upgrades

    • If you have frequent flyer miles you're willing to part with or you've worked with a travel agent, you can try to upgrade from coach class to business class or first class.
