How Long Is a Soccer Game?

The length of a soccer game depends on the level play. There are professional, college, high school, junior varsity, recreational and youth league soccer games

  1. Professional

    • Professional soccer games are 90 minutes long. They are divided up into two 45-minute halves. A tie is recorded as such unless it is a championship game, in which case they will play a 30-minute overtime period.

    College

    • College soccer games are 90 minutes. They are divided into two 45-minute halves. A tie is recorded as such, except in the case of a championship game, in which case two 10-minute "Golden Goal" periods will be played (the first team to score wins).

    High School

    • High school soccer games for both boys and girls are 80 minutes in duration. The games can be played in two 40-minute halves or four 20-minute quarters. Tied games may result in further play, depending on the individual state soccer association.

    Junior Varsity

    • Junior Varsity soccer games are 50 minutes. They are divided into two 25-minute halves. Tied games may result in further play, depending on the individual state soccer association.

    Recreational

    • Recreational soccer games are 40 minutes. They are divided into two 20-minute halves. Tied games may result in further play, depending on the individual recreation league.
