Who Needs a Converter Box?

On June 12, 2009, the United States' law requiring all full-power television stations to switch from an analog to a digital signal went into effect. While cable and satellite services have become more popular, there were still millions of households that used an antenna to receive over-the-air broadcasts. To keep people viewing without requiring them to purchase an expensive TV with a built-in digital tuner, electronics companies began manufacturing converter boxes, and the government issued $40 coupons to help offset the cost.

    Over the Air

  1. Everyone using an older television set--without a digital tuner in it--and an antenna to watch TV is required to have a converter box to continue viewing.
  2. Cable Customers

  3. If you have cable service, you do not need a converter box to continue watching TV. If you have an older set without a digital tuner that is not hooked up to cable, you will need a converter box.
  4. Satellite Customers

  5. If you subscribe to a satellite service, you do not need a converter box. Any TVs without a digital tuner that are not hooked up to the satellite will need a converter box to continue working.
  6. Misconceptions

  7. If you have cable or satellite service, you do not need a converter box--even if you are using a television without a digital tuner in it--as long as it is hooked up to the cable or satellite.
  8. Time Frame

  9. The switch from analog to digital broadcasting was scheduled to take place on Feb. 17, 2009, but because there were so many households that weren't ready for the switch, Congress extended the deadline.
