PADI, SSI and NAUI are major scuba-certifying agencies that have special standards for including children in dive classes. The minimum age for divers is 10 to 12 years old, and acceptance of junior students is based on the dive center's and the instructor's policies. Junior scuba divers and junior open water divers must meet the same knowledge and skills standards as adults. The minimum acceptable age for scuba divers (not junior level) is 15 or 16 years old.

    Significance

  1. A minimum age to scuba dive and maximum-depth limitations have been set by the certifying agencies to maintain safe diving practices. No conclusive data have been established to determine the effects of pressure on growing bodies or susceptibility of decompression illness on younger metabolisms.
  2. Levels

  3. Levels of certification available for junior scuba divers are junior scuba diver and junior open water diver, with ages for diving under the direct supervision of a dive professional (ages 10 to 12) and with certified parents or adults (ages 12 to 15). Scuba diver and open-water training are the same for juniors and adults.
  4. Considerations

  5. For safety and proper evaluation, certifying agencies establish standards for instructor-to-student ratios for confined and ocean training. When a junior diver is included, the class ratios are smaller to maintain standards to properly monitor student activities.
  6. Minimum Age

  7. The major certifying agencies have a minimum age of 10 years old for skin or scuba diving certification. The ability of the junior diver is evaluated for maturity and aptitude. Instructors take additional precautions to monitor the hypothermic effects of the water conditions on younger bodies.
  8. Limitations

  9. Junior divers are limited to diving to a maximum of 40 feet and might have shorter dive times because of exposure in the water. Junior divers are more susceptible to currents and often need help with the heavy weight of the gear.
