The Origin of African Drums

The African drum, or more specifically the Djembe drum, is an integral part West African society. The Djembe drum is used to celebrate events in both secular and religious festivities.

  1. Origins

    • The Djembe drum originated in the twelfth century with the Mandinka people. The Mandinka people trace their origins to the Mali Empire.

    The Groit Tradition

    • The Djembe drum was primarily used to accompany singers and storytellers who traveled the countryside to keep the tradition of the great Mali warrior Sundiata alive. These musicians were called "The Guardians of the Word."

    Ramadan and Other Celebrations

    • The Djembe drum was also played during the celebration of the full moon, the winter, spring and summer harvest seasons, weddings, baptisms, celebrations honoring mothers and Ramadan.

    Materials

    • The Djembe drum is made from a single piece of hardwood tree. Goatskin from Mali is used to cover the playing surface of the drum.

    Western Music

    • Such artists as The Grateful Dead, Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel have used the Djembe drum.
