With his powerful body and somewhat intimidating face, the English bulldog can look like a fighter but at heart, he's really just a gentle soul hoping for some cuddle-time with his family.

  1. Physical description

    • English bulldogs are medium-sized, stocky dogs with broad chests and large skulls. Their short muzzles and loose, folded facial skin are hallmarks of the breed.

    Temperament

    • Though English bulldogs protect their families, they're an affectionate and gentle breed overall--even around small animals and children. They're pack-oriented dogs, so need lots of time with their families.

    Training

    • English bulldogs are easy to train when they understand that you're the "alpha dog," but can be uncooperative if they believe they're the alpha. Establish leadership before you do any other training, and your dog will learn readily.

    Health Concerns

    • English bulldogs are susceptible to breathing problems, skin disorders and joint problems. They're also sensitive to both heat and cold.

    Care

    • English bulldogs need to live indoors and take daily walks in mild temperatures. The only breed-specific care they require beyond this is weekly cleaning of their facial folds with a damp cloth.

    Life Span

    • English bulldogs are short-lived, with the average lifespan being 8 to 10 years, though some have been known to live past 14 years.
