- One of the most common types of arthritis is osteoarthritis. This condition is caused by general wear and tear on joints because of old age or exercise. This leads to the breakdown and loss of cartilage of the joints, especially the hands, feet, knees and hips.
- The most common symptoms of osteoarthritis are pain, inflammation and warmth in the affected joints. After longs periods of sitting, the person may also feel stiff, especially in the hips and knees.
- Arthritis as an auto-immune disease means that the body's immune system begins attacking healthy joints. This includes many forms of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and juvenile arthritis. Scientists are not positive what causes rheumatoid arthritis, but some causes may include genetic factors and environmental factors such as a virus that trigger the disease.
- Unlike osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis affects the entire body. Body tissues and organs can become inflamed, as well as joints. Symptoms include fatigue, loss of energy, loss of appetite, joint and muscle aches. Besides being painful, joints may also be warm, red and stiff.
- Though arthritis cannot be cured, medication can be used to control pain and joint damage. Pain medications such as ibuprofen or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are helpful, as well as corticosteroids that relieve severe inflammation. Besides medication, a healthy diet and exercise can help control the disease.
