Types of Pain Killers

Whether you are uncomfortable from a headache or recovering from a surgical procedure there are different choices in pain relief available. Over-the-counter medications are typically used for minor pain and prescription pain relief is for more serious conditions. Any drug has side effects and some severe side effects occur from overuse or extended use.

  1. Over-the-Counter

    • Aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen and naproxen are all over-the-counter pain medications. These are commonly used for minor pain.

    OTC Drug Risks

    • Long-term use of OTC drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen can cause stomach upset. Acetaminophen--used in many brands, including Tylenol--can cause liver damage is used above the recommended dosage, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

    Prescription Pain Medication

    • Lorcet, Vicodin and Percocet are effective for moderate to severe pain relief, but these drugs contain acetaminophen, which if overused can cause liver damage. Oxycodone and morphine are effective pain relievers, but caution needs to be used when taken long term because of the risk of addiction with narcotic pain killers.

    Side Effects of Narcotics

    • Common side effects include dizziness, nausea, vomiting and headache. The risk of addiction is also a potential problem with narcotic pain medication use.

    Oral Steroids

    • Non-narcotic oral steroids are often prescribed for patients with chronic pain. These medications help by reducing inflammation, which can be a cause of pain.

    Steroid Side Effects

    • Side effects from oral steroids include stomach upset and allergic reactions. Oral steroids can raise blood pressure and increase heart attack risk in some patients.
