What Are the Health Benefits of Himalayan Goji Berry?

Goji berries are the small fruit of the Lycium Barbarum, or Matrimony Vine, native to southeast Asia. Goji berries have many nutrients and are hailed as a superfood with healing properties. The fruit must be ripe to be edible, and berries are usually dried, cooked or boiled.

  1. Vitamins

    • Goji berries are high in Vitamin C, which supports the immune system. They also contain Vitamins A and E, which promote skin health, and Vitamins B1, B2 and B6 which increase metabolism and improve cell growth.

    Carotenoids

    • Goji berries contain a high concentration of carotenoids such as zeaxanthin and beta-carotene. Carotenoids may decrease cancer risks, but are best known for improving eyesight and battling age-related eye disorders.

    Potential

    • Goji berries are being investigated for their cancer-fighting potential. According to a 2003 study by Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Goji berries stimulate immune responses that may be therapeutic in cancer patients.

    Other Uses

    • The "Plants for a Future" database lists many medicinal uses for goji berries, including lowering blood pressure, easing perimenopausal discomforts and treating diabetes.

    Traditional Chinese Medicine

    • Goji berries are used in traditional Chinese medicine to boost sperm count, promote circulation and improve eyesight.
