Herbs and spices are a great way to add more flavor and depth to a meal. Each herb and spice has specific pairings that work well in the culinary world. Learn how to use these major herbs and spices before moving on.

    Saffron

  1. Saffron is expensive. This spice is the stamen of a flower. According to Good Cooking, it is great to add to Spanish and Italian foods for a hint of flavor. More importantly, it adds a bright yellow color to any dish.
  2. Basil

  3. Basil comes in the form of a leaf, and is great to use in sauces. This includes tomato sauces and pesto. This herb is used most often in Italian foods.
  4. Capers

  5. Capers are a great spice to use to add flavor to any seafood dish. The caper is actually a flower bud that has been pickled.
  6. Mint

  7. Mint is an herb that is associated with dessert. Mint goes well with fruits and sweets, but also is used in Middle Eastern cooking.
  8. Oregano

  9. Oregano is an herb that has been used for generations as a way to add full-bodied flavor to soups and stews with a tomato or chicken broth base.
