Difference Between Quark Xpress & Photoshop

Although QuarkXPress and Photoshop are both professional designing programs, they are not the same type of program. They both have drawing capabilities, they both can edit text and they are both used in designing print and Web documents, but they are more different than similar.

  1. Layout vs. Photo Editing

    • Adobe Photoshop is an image editing program, which is used to edit and create images. QuarkXPress is a desktop publishing program, which is used to design layouts for images and text.

    Price

    • The retail price for QuarkXPress 8 is $799 according to Quark's website. The retail price for Adobe Photoshop CS4 is $699 according to Adobe's website; however, you can bundle the program with other software.

    History

    • Adobe launched Photoshop 1.0 in 1990; prior to Adobe's commercial version of Photoshop, it was called ImagePro, a program created by the Knoll brothers. Quark launched QuarkXPress in 1987 to computerize publishing.

    Pixels vs. Vector

    • Most of Photoshop's tools edit the pixels in the image; pixels are tiny squares that make up the computer screen. This means that as you enlarge a pixelated image, the image quality will become grainy. QuarkXPress's drawing tools use vectors; vectors are created with points and line segments. Because they do not rely on pixels, the quality of the image remains the same as you enlarge the image.

    Quality View

    • Photoshop displays the image at its current level of quality. QuarkXPress can display images at low resolution or high resolution; the default is low resolution because high resolution slows the program.
