Why Is Bottled Water So Expensive?
Bottled water has an impressive following in the United States. According to OneWorld via CommonDreams, consumers spend $100 billion a year on bottled water. Although you would think it would be cheap, bottled water can be quite expensive.
-
Packaging
-
OneWorld's Abid Aslam points out that bottled water companies use almost 3 million tons of plastic per year. This plastic, along with the cardboard (for large packages) adds to the cost of water.
Advertising
-
Advertising is an important part of the bottled water industry. Giants Aquafina and Dasani (Pepsi and Coke products, respectively) spent over $40 million o on advertising in one year, according to Miami New Time's Lee Klein.
-
Filtration
-
Some bottled waters come from regular water treatment plants. Other types of bottled water are filtered through extra filtering processes. These filtration processes add more cost to the end product.
Workers
-
Every product requires a workforce to create. Bottled water requires workers at all stages to collect water, filter water and bottle the water. People are paid to create the packaging and produce the packaging. All of these workers add to the end cost.
Imports
-
According to OneWorld, 6 percent of American bottled water is imported from various nations. The shipping costs to bring the water to the United States adds to the cost of those shipped waters.
