Norwegian Currency Conversion

The unit of currency in Norway is the krone and the plural is kroner. This is symbolized either by letters NOK or the more commonly used kr. The krone is broken down into 100 øre (this is both the singular and plural spellings). The currency name means crown. Many Scandinavian countries use this reference for currency. The Danish currency is also named krone and Sweden's is called krona.

  1. Exchange Rate

    • The exchange rate as of July 15, 2009, was 1 Norwegian krone equals 6.40 USD and 9.02 Euros. The exchange rate is found on the Norges Bank website. The website includes a chart of the exchange rates of the major currencies with which they trade. Clicking the words "Effective Krone Exchange Rate" under the chart opens a window where a wealth of information can be obtained regarding other currencies as well as historical data.

    European Union

    • Norway is not a member of the European Union. The citizens of Norway have defeated this issue by narrow margins twice. They participate with the EU on many issues, including trade. However, as they are not members of the European Union, they do not use the euro.

    Where to Change Money

    • Banks and currency exchanges are a good place to obtain kroner. Simply withdrawing money out of an ATM is a quick, easy way to obtain currency.

    Credit Cards

    • Most major credit and debit cards are widely accepted in Norway but often not in supermarkets or gas stations, where one may need cash. Otherwise, credit cards are a recommended way to pay.

    Traveler's Checks

    • Traveler's checks may be exchanged in banks, major hotels, airlines and in some shops. Smaller outlets are less likely to accept them.
