What Are the Effects of Spousal Abuse?

Spousal abuse---which can consist of physical, verbal, emotional or sexual abuse; threats of abuse; forced isolation; or financial bullying---is linked to effects that may be severe, long-lasting or even lethal.

  1. Physical

    • Victims of spousal abuse may be injured, live with chronic pain and suffer from illnesses including sexually transmitted diseases. Risks during pregnancy can range up to the death of the fetus.

    Emotional

    • Low self-esteem, difficulty trusting others, depression, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and thoughts or actions of suicide occur among victims of domestic violence.

    Behavioral

    • Spousal abuse victims are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol. They also may engage in self-injury, neglect themselves and avoid following medical advice.

    Parenting

    • Victims of spousal abuse may be hampered in their ability to nurture their children because of feeling hopeless, depressed, preoccupied, irritable, numb or withdrawn.

    Children

    • Children who witness violence may exhibit fear, insomnia, social and academic problems, numbed emotions and vindictiveness. As adults, they may turn toward substance abuse, crime and violence in the home.

    Death

    • Husbands or boyfriends are responsible for nearly a third of the killings of women in the United States.
