A private investigator uses techniques and methods to look for evidence. Private investigators might verify information and perform research on the computer for the public and private sector. Detectives hired by clients and companies are often asked to investigate potential employees, spouses and other people.

  1. History

    • Eugene François Vidocq established the first private detective agency in 1833 in France. In 1859, Allan Pinkerton opened the first agency in the United States.

    Techniques

    • Investigators often conduct surveillance as a part of investigation proceedings. The detective will prepare a report along with any video and give this to the client.

    Function

    • Sometimes law firms and insurance companies hire private investigators to confirm if a claimant is limited physically. The investigator might confirm this by watching to see what activities the claimant is doing outside or when running errands.

    Features

    • Most states require certification to work as a private detective. The detective also has to have a firearm license to carry a weapon.

    Considerations

    • Investigators utilize investigation tactics such as computer forensics and interrogation skills. As a result, many law enforcement officers work as private investigators when they retire from the force.

    • Sherlock Holmes is a famous fictional private investigator based on a character written by Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle featured this character in four of his novels.
