HD television is a format that displays a better picture than what a normal television is capable of showing. There are different resolutions and standards for HDTV.

Resolution

Each display type, whether it be a CRT or plasma, has a set amount of viewable pixels. The more pixels, the better the picture quality. Resolutions for television are 480, 720 and 1080. These numbers indicate how many pixels are viewable on any particular display type.
Interlaced and Progressive Scan

Each television lists the resolution with an "i" or a "p" (720p, 1080i) indicating whether it is an interlaced video signal or progressive scan. An interlaced video renders frames on every other horizontal line creating jagged edges. Progressive scan renders the frames completely making much smoother transitions and edges.

High Definition Resolutions

High definition displays are those that exceed the standard 480p signal type. Current high definition resolutions are 720p, 1080i and 1080p. One thing to note when purchasing a television, a 1080i signal is the equivalent to 720p which is not full HD. A full HDTV is one that is able to display a 1080p picture.
HD Satellite or Cable

Upgrading to a HD service with your satellite or cable company will improve the overall picture quality when using a HDTV. Standard resolution signals displayed on an HDTV can look blurry and unrefined due to the television's capability to show more flaws in video quality.
DVD and Blu-ray

Because standard definition signals look sup-par on HDTVs, a Blu-ray player or an upconverting DVD player is recommended when watching DVDs. Upconverting DVD players take a standard definition DVD with a 480p resolution and upscale it to 1080p, making the video clearer. Blu-ray players also have this function and are able to play Blu-ray discs which are native 1080p.
