- In 1992 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned the use of silicone breast implants for safety reasons because of reports of implants rupturing and claims made that diseases were caused by silicone implants rupturing.
- In 2006, the FDA approved the use of silicone breast implants because significant data was not found to prove that they increased the risks of diseases, such as connective tissue disease, as previously claimed.
- Silicone breast implants do not last forever and need to be replaced after 10 years on the average patient.
- Silicone breast implants can be responsible for infections, fluid accumulation around the implant site and hematomas.
- Scar tissue can form in the breast which can lead to breast pain and tenderness and also cause disfigurement of the breast.
