What Are the Treatments for Oral Thrush?

Oral thrush causes white, bleeding lesions to appear in the mouth. The condition is caused by a fungus known as Candida albicans. Oral thrush most commonly affects babies and the elderly.

  1. Infants

    • Oral thrush in infants is treated with anti-fungal medication. Wash all pacifiers and bottle nipples in water and white vinegar daily until treatment is finished. Fungus can spread to a nursing mother and will require a topical anti-fungal treatment for the breasts.

    Children

    • Children with healthy immune systems usually fight the infection naturally. If it continues, treatment with antibiotics is the next step. Also, feeding the child unsweetened yogurt can promote a healthy balance of bacteria in the mouth. In extreme cases, anti-fungal medications may be used.

    Healthy Adults

    • Healthy adults should be able to fight off oral thrush by eating unsweetened yogurt or taking acidophilus supplements. This promotes the growth of healthy bacteria to kill the fungus. If these measures don't work, an anti-fungal medication can be used.

    Adults with Weakened Immune Systems

    • In adults with compromised immune systems, oral thrush will usually not be fought off naturally by the body or with the aid of yogurt or acidophilus. Anti-fungal medication will be necessary.

    Other Remedies

    • The treatment process of oral thrush can be aided with the use of a saltwater rinse twice a day. There is evidence to suggest that eating raw garlic or garlic paste can also contribute to fighting the infection.
