Cosequin Dosages for Cats

Cosequin is a joint supplement developed by Nutramax Laboratories, Inc. containing glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, and is one of the few joint supplements developed for cats. Cosequin is also one of the few joint supplements that have scientific studies which show effectiveness. Some veterinarians also believe Cosequin helps improve the health of a cat's bladder.

Obtaining Cosequin

Cosequin is not a drug and does not need a prescription. You may find Cosequin at your veterinarian's office, or through mail-order and Internet catalogs.

Loading Dose

Nutramax Laboratories recommends that you start with a higher dose for the first four to six weeks, which may be one or two capsules every day, depending on the severity of the cat's problems.

Maintenance Dose

After the time period of the loading dose, your cat may be dropped to one capsule every other day. If your cat's condition worsens after being dropped to the maintenance dose, continue with the loading dose.

Giving the Capsules

Cosequin capsules are available as flavored and unflavored capsules, which can be opened and the contents mixed with food. The capsule can also be given whole as a pill.

Changing the Dose

Give the loading dose time to work. It can take a few weeks for your cat to show improvement from the Cosequin supplement, and improvements may be gradual.
