Risperdal Patient Information

Risperdal (risperidone) is commercially available with a prescription. As with any prescription drug, side effects are possible. As a consumer you should be well-informed of the risks, as well as the benefits, before taking Risperdal.

  1. Benefits

    • Risperdal is an atypical antipsychotic medication that works by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain. Risperdal is FDA approved to treat schizophrenia and symptoms of bipolar disorder. It is often also used to treat symptoms of irritability in children that suffer from autism.

    Identification

    • Risperdal is available in the following strengths: .25 mg (dark yellow), 0.5 mg (red-brown), 1 mg (white), 2 mg (orange), 3 mg (yellow) and 4 mg (green). Risperdal is also available in a 1 mg/mL oral solution.

    Precautions

    • Before taking Risperdal, you should speak with your doctor if you have any of the following conditions: liver disease, kidney disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, heart rhythm problems, a history of heart attack or stroke, a history of breast cancer, seizures or epilepsy, diabetes (risperidone may raise your blood sugar), a history of suicidal thoughts, Parkinson's disease or trouble swallowing.

    Dosage

    • Risperdal should be taken exactly as prescribed by your physician. You should not take Risperdal in larger amounts or for a longer period of time than recommended by your physician. Take Risperdal with a full glass of water.

    Warning

    • As with all prescription drugs, there are many reported side effects from Risperdal that you should be aware of before taking this medication. Contact your physician if you experience any of the following side effects: fever, stiff muscles, confusion, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats, restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck, tremor, trouble swallowing or feeling light-headed and fainting.
