Mucinex Guaifenesin Side Effects

Mucinex guaifenesin is an expectorant taken to loosen and thin out mucus in the chest and throat caused by colds, allergies, or infections. Mucinex is available over the counter. There are possible side effects to the medication, so following proper dosage and directions is important.

  1. How to Take Mucinex

    • Take the Mucinex tablet whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush, chew or break the capsule. Mucinex can be taken with or without food.

    Dosage

    • Adults and children 12 years and older should only take 1 to 2 capsules every 12 hours and not exceed 4 capsules in a 24 hour period. Children under the age of 12 should not take this medicine.

    Side Effects

    • Seek medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction resulting in hives, difficulty breathing or swelling in the face, lips, tongue or throat. Mucinex may also impair thinking and reactions, so use caution while operating motor vehicles or machinery. Less serious side effects may include headache, dizziness, upset stomach, nausea or vomiting.

    Overdose

    • While an overdose of guaifensin is not likely to cause life-threatening consequences, seek emergency care if you suspect it.

    Warnings

    • Children under the age of 12 should not take this medication. Stop use if your cough lasts more than 7 days, your cough returns or your cough is accompanied with fever, rash or persistent headache.

    Precautions

    • If pregnant or breast feeding, consult your doctor before using this medication.

      If you smoke, have asthma, chronic bronchitis or emphysema, contact your doctor or pharmacist before using this medication.
