Types of Hamsters

The two main species of domesticated hamster are the Syrian and Dwarf. However, there are several breeds in each species, with a variety of coats and colors. Knowing the distinguishing features and unique needs of each will help prospective owners provide them with a healthy and satisfying life.

  1. Types

    • Syrian hamsters include the Teddy Bear, Golden, Black Bear and Panda Bear varieties. Dwarf hamsters include the Chinese, Winter White, Campells and Russian/Roborovski.

    Identification

    • Teddy Bears have long, fluffy hair and come in all colors. Golden, Black Bears and Panda Bears have short hair and are gold, black and black and white, respectively. Campbells Dwarfs come in many colors, but Roborovski, Chinese and Winter White Dwarfs are mostly brownish-gray. However, Winter White hamsters turn white every winter.

    Features

    • Syrian hamsters are more easily tamed and must live alone. Dwarf hamsters are much more temperamental and require communal living. While mostly nocturnal, the American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association claims that the Dwarf varieties are occasionally also active during the day.

    Size

    • Syrian hamsters can reach a length of up to 8 inches, but Dwarf hamsters don't get larger than 4 inches. Syrians are more barrel-shaped, while Dwarfs are more bullet-shaped.

    Fun Fact

    • Hamsters store food inside pouches in their cheeks. These pouches are designed to prevent food from falling into their mouth and to keep food dry.
