Angkor Wat is the largest, most impressive and most famous temple in Cambodia and is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, the entire region is a huge archaeological park featuring hundreds of temples and ruins near modern Siem Reap.

  1. History

    • The walkway approaching the main temple of Angkor Wat.

      Angkor Wat was built in the 12th century as home of the Hindu god, Vishnu. However, a later king converted the official religion of the region to Buddhist. This temple was never completely abandoned and continues as a Buddhist temple today.

    Significance

    • Friezes include scenes of daily life, battles and images from Hindu epics.

      Angkor Wat exemplifies Khmer architecture. The temple complex is surrounded by a huge moat almost half a mile on each side. The temple complex is accessed by an imposing walkway.

    • There are  more than 1,500 bas relief friezes of female deities carved in different styles and eras.

      There are five sets of walls around the central tower, each level taller than the last. Inside the walls are galleries walls are extensive decorations with bas-relief friezes of battles, gods and goddesses, and lives of kings.

    • Exploring the numerous buildings takes half a day.

      The architecture is magnificent, but the art on the walls is what makes Angkor Wat so special. There are friezes of battle scenes and episodes of Hindu epics. Virtually every surface is carved.

      There is a sound and light show at Angkor Wat every evening, This is not included in your ticket price. The entire complex is lit up, and the bas-relief friezes take on a different look at night.
