Uses of Serger Sewing Machines

Serger sewing machines are not traditional sewing machines. Instead, they are used for non-conventional stitching that gives a garment a professional finish. Sergers are also called overlock machines and can be used for tasks a standard machine cannot perform.

  1. History

    • A serger has roots that go back to the late 1800s and is based on the concept of crochet. Sergers have evolved over the years from a difficult-to-use machine to a household device that is user friendly.

    Types

    • Sergers are available in several thread types, from two up to five threads. The most common is four threads.

    Function

    • All sergers are able to create an overlock stitch for seam finishes, along with a professional, rolled hem. The overlock stitch is also used to stitch knit fabrics as it does not stretch like a standard sewing machine. Sergers cut the fabric edge as it sews to create a professional finish.

    Features

    • The serger components include two knives that cut the edge of the fabric as it sews, two needles that assist with looping the threads for an overlock stitch and up to five spools of thread, depending on the style of stitch being sewn.

    Warning

    • A serger sews faster than the standard sewing machine. Due to the cutting blades, it is recommended that the machine be operated slowly until a comfort level has been reached.
