Difference Between Male and Female Dogs
The decision to bring home a new dog should not be taken lightly, as it typically involves making a 10- to 15-year commitment to house, feed and provide medical care for an animal that is completely dependent on you. Both male and female dogs make wonderful pets, but there are minor differences that you may want to consider. Keep in mind that these differences are only generalizations, and, like with people, the personality and temperament of your dog will be unique.

Within each breed, the males are typically taller, heavier and stronger than their female counterparts.
Temperament

The canine temperament varies widely among, and even within, breeds. Generally speaking, however, female dogs tend to be more independent, territorial, dignified and moody, while males are more demanding, attentive, exuberant and affectionate.

Trainability

Ease of training depends heavily on breed, but generally, female dogs are eager to please, attentive and quite responsive to training. While male dogs also posses these qualities, they may be more easily distracted and have a tendency to "clown around."
Housebreaking

With proper and consistent training, all dogs can be housebroken. However, females may be a bit easier to train and quicker to learn, as they do not generally posses the desire to "mark" their territory as do their male counterparts.
Children

Some trainers and breeders may recommend a female dog for families with young children, as they believe that females tend to be more gentle and maternal, while males tend to play rough and be more rambunctious.
Other Dogs

Female dogs are more likely to fight with each other and may prefer the company of a male instead. Male dogs are generally more adaptable and accepting of other males and pets.
