Information About the Animals in Tanzania

Tanzania has a diverse animal population, with 332 total species residing in the African country. Of these, 14 species are found nowhere else in the world. A number of these animals are threatened or endangered, which has led to some rehabilitation projects in the region.

  1. Black Rhinoceros

    • The Black Rhinoceros is one of the critically endangered animals in Tanzania. Poaching has led to the severe decline of this animal, but in recent years its numbers have been slowly increasing.

    Blue Whale

    • Most people do not think of sea creatures when they think of Tanzanian or African animals in general. However, Tanzania is home to large marine mammals, such as the Blue Whale.

    Shrews

    • There are a number of different types of shrews, many of which are only found in Tanzania. These endemic creatures include the Desperate Shrew and the Tanzanian Shrew.

    Cheetah

    • Cheetahs were once kept as pets by nobles in Africa and Europe, but today their population is in decline. Tanzania has one of the largest populations of these animals.

    Pemba Flying Fox

    • The Pemba Flying Fox is actually a type of fruit bat. The only place in the world it is found in is Pemba Island, which is just off the coast and part of Tanzania.
