Why Babies Grind Their Teeth

Tooth grinding (a behavior clinically referred to as bruxism) is extremely common in babies and toddlers. Experts disagree about the specific causes of bruxism in babies, but there are many theories about why some babies grind their teeth.

  1. Experimentation

    • When babies are first sprouting their teeth between 4 and 10 months of age, they may grind their upper and bottom incisors as an act of experimentation. They may simply like the sound it makes.

    Pain

    • Babies and toddlers may grind their teeth because they are in pain. This can occur because of teething, an earache, or a sore throat.

    Anxiety

    • Older toddlers and children grind their teeth because of tension, stress, or anxiety. Bruxism is not considered a sign of anxiety in babies and young toddlers.

    Genetics

    • Children are more likely to grind their teeth if one or both parents do so. Adults who grind their teeth usually do so in their sleep.

    When to Worry

    • Tooth-grinding is generally harmless, but it can result in tooth erosion and cavities if it takes place for an extended period of time. Talk to a pediatrician or pediatric dentist if your baby grinds his teeth often for more than a few months.
